Digital national blood donor register to be introduced this year

Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, announced that a digitised national blood donor register will be introduced later this year to improve coordination between blood donors and recipients. Speaking at a World Blood Donor Day ceremony, Haleem said a system has been established through the OneGov portal to maintain a registry of thalassaemia patients. The digital register aims to simplify matching donors with recipients and improve efficiency. Haleem also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen thalassaemia and blood-related healthcare, including a DNA laboratory opened in February, expanded blood transfusion services on Fridays, and new endocrinology, haematology, antigen typing, and bone marrow testing services introduced in 2025. He emphasized blood donation as an act of compassion and social responsibility, especially in a Muslim-majority society, and thanked donors, private organizations, and resorts. The government under President Mohamed Muizzu is prioritizing care for thalassaemia patients who depend on regular transfusions.
