Malé City Council Assumes Management of Municipal Services in Hulhumalé
The Maldivian government has transferred the management of municipal functions in Hulhumalé from Urbanco to the Malé City Council. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on Sunday and announced by President Mohamed Muizzu. The transfer process, including offices, machinery, equipment, municipal land, and staff, is to be completed within one month, starting from 1 January 2024. All staff will receive the same remuneration for one year. This move fulfills a campaign pledge by President Muizzu to transfer municipal services to the city council within his first 100 days in office. Previously, Hulhumalé was managed by Urbanco, a fully state-owned enterprise, despite being part of Malé city. In December 2021, the city council annulled land registrations under Urbanco, but the annulment was later reversed in court.
