Govt to Launch ‘Essential Commodity Price Index’ to Tackle Cost of Living

Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed announced the introduction of an Essential Commodity Price Index to track prices of key household food items, as part of efforts to stabilize the cost of living. Speaking on PSM's Raajje Miadhu, Saeed noted that since President Muizzu's administration, essential items have remained stable, especially during Ramadan. The National Bureau of Statistics will publish the index within two days, covering 162 commodities: 111 food and beverage items, 39 fruits and vegetables, 10 fish products, and 2 energy products. The index will allow real-time monitoring and targeted action. Currently, inflation measured via CPI stands at 3.76% as of June.
