The Ministry of Tourism and Environment confirmed that Kihaa Maldives has been operating illegally, in violation of the Maldives Tourism Act, since its licence expired on 27 September 2024. The resort, located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Hanifaru Bay, is owned by Athama Marine International Private Limited and has avoided paying mandatory taxes. The Ministry urged tour operators, travel agencies, and booking platforms to cease all cooperation with the resort and advised guests to cancel bookings. Legal action is being taken.
