Tourism Minister Visits Stalled Resort Projects, Seeks to Facilitate Completion
Maldives Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal visited the island of Maarendhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll over the weekend to inspect a stalled resort project leased to a Chinese company in 2016. Development has been stalled since 2019. Faisal noted that about 50-60% of construction is complete and estimated the project could be finished in two years with proper effort. He announced a special committee to address stalled developments. An estimated US$1.7 billion is lost annually from such stalled tourism islands. Currently, 63 islands have stalled projects, with 29 in Kaafu Atoll and 10 in GDh Atoll. Faisal stated that 25 of these could be completed within five years. The main issue is lack of funds, and the Economic Council will identify and facilitate solutions. He plans to submit proposals to the Cabinet soon.
