WHO Praises Maldives’ Vigilance in Identifying Contaminated Syrups
The World Health Organization praised the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) for identifying harmful contaminants (diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol) in syrups manufactured by PHARMIX Laboratories. MFDA detected these in November 2023 using a novel screening method, leading to a proactive screening programme. In response, Pakistan's Drug Regulatory Authority (DRAP) ordered PHARMIX to cease production of oral liquid medicines and recalled five syrups on 16 November 2023. WHO Representative Dr Nazneen Anwar commended MFDA's work as a beacon of success. The case highlights international collaboration and risk-based market surveillance.
