The Democrats Opt for Neutrality in Presidential Runoff
The Democrats, who finished third in the first round of the presidential election on 9 September, have decided to remain neutral in the runoff. They set conditions for coalition with MDP (constitutional referendum by 28 September) and PPM-PNC (written agreement on administrative responsibilities), but neither party met the deadline. Their 15,807 votes (7% of total) could have been pivotal in the close race between PPM-PNC's Dr Mohamed Muizzu (46%) and MDP's Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (39%). The Democrats, a breakaway from MDP, advocate for a shift to a parliamentary system. Other minor candidates also stayed neutral, while MNP backed PPM-PNC. The decision may strengthen The Democrats' push for a governance referendum.
