Maldives Resumes Coastal Development Projects as Coral Bleaching Subsides
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lifted a temporary ban on major coastal development activities that was imposed on 9 May to mitigate a mass coral bleaching event. The ban, recommended by the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), was to last until 10 June. The EPA raised the bleaching alert level to Alert Level 2 and urged contractors to suspend projects near reefs until after 31 August. Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim stated that over 200 suspended projects can now resume, some already restarted. He noted four coral bleaching events in Maldives' history (1998, 2016, and two others).
