Sinamalé Bridge Maintenance Resumes With Local Training Initiative

Second Habour Engineering Company Ltd. (HSEC), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), has been awarded the maintenance of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge (Sinamalé Bridge) after a three-year hiatus. The three-year contract, worth US$3.6 million, includes a comprehensive training programme for local technicians to eventually take over maintenance. The contract covers identification of repair needs, preventive maintenance, record-keeping, future maintenance assessment, and routine work. Maldivians will be trained in bridge engineering, road engineering, electro-mechanical, traffic safety, facility landscaping, and bridge maintenance. The project is under the 'Economic and Technical Cooperation Between the Governments of China and the Maldives' agreement, signed by Minister Abdulla Muththalib and Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin. The bridge, inaugurated on 30 August 2018, connects Malé and Hulhumalé via Hulhulé Island.
