Maldivian Issues RFP for Dry-Lease of Wide-Body Aircraft
Island Aviation Services Ltd (IAS), operator of Maldivian, issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a five-year dry-lease of an Airbus A330-200 aircraft. The deadline for bid registration is 18 January 2024, with the winner announced on 10 February 2024. IAS expects to lease the aircraft by the second quarter of 2024. The government will provide funds via the Ministry of Finance. Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said plans include starting wide-body operations to three regions in China, Johannesburg in South Africa, and three European destinations within six months. Currently, 48% of tourists arrive via connecting flights due to lack of direct flights. Maldivian previously flew to China but halted due to Covid-19. It now operates to India and Bangladesh. The lease cost is estimated at US$15 million over five years. IAS is a 100% state-owned company.
