Human Rights Commission Highlights Issues in Parliamentary Election Process
The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) released a report on issues observed during the parliamentary elections on 21 April 2024. 88 observers monitored elections across 35 islands. While the EC was commended overall, problems included: 77% of polling stations opened on time, 45% did not verify ballot papers before deadline, 37% were not accessible to voters with disabilities, 20 stations had ballot boxes placed on tall tables, voter lists not displayed at three stations, campaign materials near polling areas, influence on disabled voters, and phone/photography violations. The elections saw PNC win 66 seats. Only 3 of 43 female candidates were elected. New MPs to be sworn in on 28 May.
