EU Election Observation Mission Commends ECM in Final Report

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) released its final report on the 2023 presidential elections in the Maldives, held on 9 and 30 September. Chief Observer Nacho Sánchez Amor commended the technical proficiency and professional conduct of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM). Deputy Chief Observer Anne Marlborough highlighted the inclusive voter and candidate registration, with a record eight candidates. However, Amor pointed to significant shortcomings: underrepresentation of women, vote-buying, misuse of public office, lack of transparency in campaign finance, and media bias. The EU EOM proposed 20 recommendations, including improving civic education, reforming campaign finance laws, training journalists, supporting fact-checking, promoting women in leadership, and clarifying ballot paper validation. The mission was conducted from 31 July to 15 October 2023, with 40 observers from 18 EU Member States and partner countries including Canada, Norway, and Switzerland.
