Three Malé City Council Members Join Ruling PNC
Three members of the Malé City Council have joined the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) from other parties. Ibrahim Aboobakuru, representing West Maafannu, left the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and briefly joined the People's National Front (PNF) before joining PNC, citing the government's failure to free former President Abdulla Yameen and PPM influence. Mohamed Areesh (Northeast Maafannu) left the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Aishath Nazima (South Mahchangoalhi) left PPM. They submitted membership forms to President Mohamed Muizzu. Earlier, Ahmed Rishwaan Rasheed defected from MDP to PNC after winning a by-election. The council now has 16 PNC members out of 19. MDP and The Democrats have agreed to collaborate in national interest, seen as a counterbalance to the ruling party's influence ahead of parliamentary elections.
