Mohamed Umar Maniku (MU Maniku), co-founder of Kurumba Maldives (the country's first resort, opened in 1972 in Kaafu Atoll), died at age 78 in Singapore. He was chairman of Universal Enterprises, which operates multiple luxury resorts, a founding member and long-time chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), and former chairman of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) for about a decade. He received national honors including the Public Service Award and National Award of Honour. He is survived by his wife and two children. Funeral services were held in Singapore and Male.
