Japan Signs Agreements to Enhance Maldives’ Maritime Safety, Disaster Response Capabilities
On 25 March 2024, the Maldives and Japan signed four exchange notes to enhance maritime safety, security, and disaster response. Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer and Japanese Ambassador Takeuchi Midori signed the agreements. Japan will provide a Customs Patrol Craft, JPY 260 million for maritime safety, JPY 600 million for disaster response equipment, and JPY 56 million for Customs patrol vessel operations. Japan committed US$2.3 million for a 25-metre patrol vessel. Diplomatic ties date to 14 November 1967.
