Muizzu Urges Modi to Expedite Completion of Malé-Thilafushi Bridge Project
President Mohamed Muizzu requested Indian PM Narendra Modi to expedite the Malé-Thilafushi Bridge, part of the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP), during COP28 sidelines on 1 December 2023. The 6.7km bridge and causeway network connects Malé, Villimalé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi. The project, contracted to India's Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., is funded by a US$100 million grant and US$400 million line of credit from India. Initially due by May 2024, the deadline was extended to September 2026 by the previous administration. Muizzu expressed hope for completion by end of 2024 or early 2025, and proposed a joint committee. Minister Abdulla Muththalib cited Afcons' inexperience and underestimated complexity as delays. The total cost remains US$500 million excluding taxes.
