President Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday, 25 May 2025, signed into law the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Serious Offences Act, granting police sweeping powers including warrantless searches and delaying access to legal counsel for up to 48 hours. The bill, submitted by Machchangolhi South MP Musthafa Hussain, was passed by parliament on 15 May with 55 votes in favour, none against, and 11 abstentions. Convictions for leading an organized crime group carry up to 25 years in prison and fines of MVR 3-10 million. The law also bans gang symbols and allows property forfeiture before conviction. It takes effect three months after ratification.
