Voting Underway in Malé City Council By-Elections; Voters Choose New Mayor, Three Council Members

Voting in the Malé City Council by-elections on 13 January 2024 began at 8:00 AM and was extended to 5:00 PM due to heavy rain and flooding the previous day. Over 54,680 voters were eligible to elect a new mayor and fill three council seats in South Maafannu, Central Henveiru, and South Henveiru. The mayor position became vacant after Dr Mohamed Muizzu resigned in November 2023 to become president. Three councillors also resigned: Abdulla Nasir, Adam Rameez, and Fathimath Shamnaz Ali Saleem. Five candidates contested for mayor: Aishath Azima Shakoor (PNC), Adam Azim (MDP), Saif Fathih (Democrats), and independents Hussain Waheed and Shuaib Ali. Early turnout was modest.
