19 Filariasis Cases Confirmed Among Migrant Workers in Kulhudhuffushi

A resurgence of Filariasis, a disease previously eradicated in the Maldives, has been confirmed with 19 cases among migrant workers in Kulhudhuffushi City. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) established a special taskforce to combat the outbreak. The taskforce includes officials from Kulhudhuffushi Hospital, local council, and other bodies. They have screened 295 migrants and are screening more. The HPA received test kits from the World Health Organization (WHO) and seeks additional resources. The response includes eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and raising awareness. Filariasis is a chronic mosquito-borne parasitic infection causing severe health issues. The last reported case was in 2004 in Fonadhoo, Laamu Atoll. The Maldives was declared free of Filariasis in 2016 after WHO evaluation in 2011.
