Malaysia's Bestinet expat system to be launched on April 1
A new system from Malaysian company Bestinet to manage foreign workers in the Maldives will be launched on April 1. Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan announced the pilot phase completion and official launch. The system is being tested using two state-owned enterprises. The agreement with Bestinet was reached after a 2016 agreement failed and USD 13.7 million in damages could not be paid. Following President Mohamed Muizzu's decision to resume the agreement, the company will receive MVR 6.9 billion over 15 years. The government earns MVR 6200 per foreign worker per year, comprising a quota fee of MVR 2000 and a work permit fee of MVR 4200. Under the agreement, the government pays Bestinet USD 100 (MVR 1542) per worker annually, and the employee pays USD 50 (MVR 771) for medical insurance.
