The Velana International Airport (VIA) expansion project is a major infrastructure initiative in the Maldives, launched under former President Abdulla Yameen, involving construction of a new passenger terminal, runway, cargo terminal, and fuel farm. It has attracted financing from the Saudi Fund for Development and a construction contract with Saudi Bin Laden Group, but has been criticized for its high cost and alleged political motivations following the cancellation of a prior agreement with India's GMR Group.
