Maldives Sets Record Straight on High Commissioner’s Meeting With Afghan Diplomat

The Maldives government clarified that a meeting between its High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mohamed Thoha, and Afghanistan's Acting Ambassador Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb was not sanctioned by the government. The meeting, held on 1 November 2024 in Islamabad, focused on enhancing bilateral relations and trade. The government affirmed it recognizes the UN representative government of Afghanistan and has taken appropriate actions. Diplomatic relations between Maldives and Afghanistan were established in March 2006.

Pakistan Wants 1.7M Afghan Asylum Seekers to Leave by November

Pakistan has ordered approximately 1.7 million unauthorised Afghan asylum seekers to leave by November, citing increased attacks along the border. The Taliban government in Afghanistan condemned the move as 'unacceptable.' Pakistan's Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti did not explicitly reference recent attacks. A deadly explosion in Mastung killed at least 50 people. Pakistan has hosted Afghan refugees for decades, with 1.3 million registered and 880,000 with legal status. The UN has registered numbers. Bugti said law enforcement would be used for deportations if asylum seekers do not comply.
