Algeria Inaugurates Africa’s Largest Mosque
The Great Mosque of Algiers, Africa's largest mosque with the tallest minaret at 265 meters, was inaugurated. It is the third-largest mosque globally and can hold 120,000 devotees. Construction by a Chinese firm faced delays and cost overruns due to political instability. The mosque was originally intended as a legacy project for President Bouteflika but was renamed after protests in 2019 led to his resignation. Inauguration attended by President Tebboune. The mosque has been associated with corruption allegations. Ali Mohamed Salabi of the World Union of Muslim Ulemas said it guides Muslims 'toward goodness and moderation'.
