PSM Accused of Editing Quranic Verse at Event Featuring President Muizzu

Maldives state broadcaster Public Service Media (PSM) is accused of editing a Quranic verse in a video of a reception held during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Rasdhoo Island in Alifu Alifu Atoll. The verse, Surah Al-Hujurat Ayah 6, includes the Arabic word 'Fasiq' (evildoer), which was omitted in the edited version shared on social media. Critics allege the edit was deliberate to dissociate the verse from President Muizzu amid accusations of lying. PSM deleted the video after public outcry, but supporters claim it was a technical mistake. The incident has sparked widespread anger, as altering Quranic text is considered an act of disbelief.

President Muizzu Announces Return of Utility Discounts for Ramadan

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the reinstatement of utility bill discounts for Ramadan, which were introduced last year. The discounts, which matched bills to average previous monthly usage, provided over USD 9.2 million in savings. Muizzu made the announcement during a visit to Mathiveri, Alifu Alifu Atoll. He also pledged additional support, including distribution of staple foods and a case of tuna per household, coordinated by the State Trading Organization (STO). Last year, 1.6 million kg of rice and flour were distributed to 82,000 households. The initiative aims to ease financial burdens during Ramadan.
