President Muizzu halts Dhonfanu reclamation: “No project without people’s consent”
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu formally withdrew the land-reclamation project on B. Dhonfanu after residents opposed it. The project, initially agreed upon, was slated to expand the island by about 13 hectares. Environmental concerns about nearby UNESCO-designated Hanifaru Bay, a biosphere for whale sharks and reef mantas, led to a petition with over 1,800 signatures. The President emphasized that the government will not impose projects without people's consent, reinforcing a pattern of citizen-centred governance.
