Amazon Rainforest Nations Gather to Address Pressing Challenges
Leaders from Amazon rainforest nations met in Belem, Brazil, for a two-day summit organized by the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO). Delegates from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela aimed to develop a comprehensive strategy for conservation and sustainable management of the Amazon. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who pledged to eliminate deforestation by 2030, opened the summit. Data showed a 60% reduction in deforestation in July compared to the previous year. The summit focused on shared policies for preservation, security, and border management. The Amazon is a crucial carbon sink but faces threats from deforestation, illegal logging, and mining. A study indicated that nearly half of the deforestation in the eastern Amazon must be remedied to maintain climate buffer role. Carbon emissions from the Amazon increased 117% in 2020 compared to 2010-2018 average.
