Menstrual leave could lead to discrimination against women: Irani

Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani told the Rajya Sabha that menstrual leave could lead to discrimination against women in the workforce. She responded to a query on whether the government is considering a law for menstrual leave. Irani said menstruation is not a handicap and that such issues should not deny women equal opportunity. Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha asked about compulsory menstrual leave. Irani noted that Bihar under former CM Lalu Prasad Yadav was the first state to have a menstrual leave policy. She also said no complaints have been recorded for sanitary pads provided by the government under the Suvidha scheme.
