US and Iran conclude high-level talks in Switzerland, mediators say
The first round of high-level talks between US and Iranian officials in Switzerland ended on Monday, with mediators Qatar and Pakistan announcing a roadmap toward a final deal within 60 days. Technical talks will continue at the Qatari-owned Swiss resort of Buergenstock. The parties agreed to a mechanism to end fighting in Lebanon and opened a communications line for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran secured waivers for oil exports, release of frozen assets, and a reconstruction plan. The talks were tense, with Trump threatening to resume attacks if Iran did not rein in proxies. US Vice President JD Vance played down violence in Lebanon, saying progress was made. Oil prices fell after the joint statement.
