First Lady inaugurates “Lifestyle Intervention Programme”

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed launched the 'Lifestyle Intervention Programme' in Dhiggaru, Meemu Atoll, on World Diabetes Day 2024. The programme aims to assess how sustainable lifestyle changes can reduce diabetes risk. Residents over 16 will be screened, and high-risk individuals targeted. The programme identified that 73% of the populace are at risk of developing diabetes within 10 years without lifestyle changes. First Lady Sajidha noted the rise in non-communicable diseases due to lifestyle changes as the Maldives develops. CEO of Diabetic Society of Maldives Aishath Shiruhana stated the programme will aid prevention and awareness. The programme is a collaboration with Dhiggaru Island Council and health centre, with support from two ministries. Ten locals were trained as lifestyle coaches.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed inaugurated the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Clinic at Dhiggaru Health Centre, Meemu Atoll, during her official trip for World Diabetes Day. The clinic aims to address increasing NCD cases, with diabetes and high blood pressure rising; the island ranks second for diagnosed individuals. The clinic will provide testing and awareness. It is located in the administrative building developed in 2023. Dhiggaru Health Centre has operated since 2004, providing round-the-clock services with two doctors, serving residents and nearby resorts. It offers laboratory and mobile lab services, averaging 15-20 patients daily.

Multiple Development Projects Completed in Meemu Atoll

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih marked the completion of various development projects in Meemu Atoll, including new health centre wings, powerhouses, water supply networks, and coastal protection. Projects were inaugurated on six islands: Mulah, Dhiggaru, Raiymandhoo, Kolhufushi, Muli, and Naalaafushi. The water supply networks were funded by Indian Exim Bank's US$800 million line of credit, and coastal protection was financed through the Green Fund.
