HRS Infratech Shirks MVR 100 Million Fine Over Dhihdhoo Reef Damage, Faces Possible Legal Action
HRS Infratech failed to pay a MVR 100 million fine imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for damage to the reef of Dhihdhoo island in Haa Alifu Atoll caused by its vessels TB Mutha Princess and Mutha Pride. The fine was imposed on September 19 with a one-month deadline. EPA Director General Ibrahim Naeem said that if the fine remains unpaid, the EPA will direct the Attorney General’s Office to take legal action to recover the fines. The damage to a 4,038 square meter area was assessed at MVR 101,743,400, but due to legal caps, the fine was set at MVR 100 million, the maximum allowed.
