Egypt, Sudan Concerned as Ethiopia Fills Nile Renaissance Dam

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the successful fourth and final filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile River, causing concern in Egypt and Sudan. The $4.2 billion hydroelectric project has strained relations since its launch in 2011. Ethiopia shut three of four diversion outlets, reducing downstream water levels and disrupting Sudan's pumping stations. Egypt and Sudan seek a compromise to ensure their water security.
