Post-Brexit Vet Shortage Sparks Concerns Over Meat Imports to the UK

Concerns arise over a shortage of veterinarians in Europe due to new post-Brexit regulations. The British Meat Processors Association warns that the scarcity may delay meat imports to the UK. The UK government will launch the first stage of its border target operating model on Wednesday, requiring all meat and dairy exports to be certified by a European vet with a seven-page document. A 2020 survey found nearly four in five EU countries already facing vet shortages. The European Livestock and Meat Trades Union is negotiating with the UK government. About 1.5 million tonnes of meat and poultry are imported annually from the EU.

Swiss Women Take Climate Battle to European Court of Human Rights

A group of 2,400 senior Swiss women, KlimaSeniorinnen, have taken the Swiss government to the European Court of Human Rights, alleging insufficient climate action violates human rights. The group, aged 64 and older, hiked in the Göschener Alps to symbolise their fight. Members like Pia Hollenstein (73, retired nurse, former Green party member) highlight the link between rising temperatures from fossil fuels and heat-related deaths among older women. They also point to glacier melting's impact on Switzerland. The hike occurred despite record high zero-degree line and heat warnings.
