Ahmed Saleem Elected as New Deputy Speaker of Parliament

Ahmed Saleem, MP for Eydhafushi constituency, has been elected as Deputy Speaker of Parliament with 62 votes out of 72 cast, defeating Hussain Ziyad who received 10 votes. Saleem is serving his fourth consecutive term, having first entered the 17th People's Majlis. The election followed the resignation of former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, who stepped down as Parliament prepared to consider a motion for his removal. The motion was submitted on May 14, and Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced an additional sitting to elect a successor.

President Muizzu Pledges Housing Units, Harbour Upgrade, and Sports Complex for Eydhafushi

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during a tour of Baa Atoll, pledged a landmark infrastructure initiative for Eydhafushi, including 1,000 housing units, harbour development within six months, and an indoor multi-sport complex, all to be funded in next year's national budget. He also announced a policy framework for reclaimed land development, expansion of water and power networks, a US dollar ATM, and additional housing plots. A convention centre is scheduled for next year. He inaugurated a new RTL ferry service and witnessed agreements for a Maldives National University campus and Baa Atoll Hospital building. Muizzu stressed decentralisation and urged local councils to prioritise development over politics.
