Prominent scholar Sheikh Ismail Mohamed passes away
Sheikh Ismail Mohamed (Thoiba Sheikh), a prominent Islamic scholar in the Maldives, passed away last night at age 85 while undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital. Originally from Dh. Meedhoo, he dedicated his life to Islamic education and was honored with the National Award of Honor and an Honorary Doctorate from the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) on April 19 last year. He privately funded construction of a mosque in Hulhumalé Phase 1, whose foundation stone was laid by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on March 5 last year. He founded Thoiba School in Malé and facilitated higher education for over 100 Maldivian students in Pakistan. He published around 40 books and was working on a Dhivehi translation of 'Al-Tafseer Al-Muyassar'. His funeral prayer is scheduled at the Islamic Centre today after Dhuhr prayer. President Muizzu extended condolences.
