Work to Revive Facility at Funahdoo and Increase Processing Capacity Nationwide Underway: Fisheries Minister
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam informed Parliament that the ministry is working to revive the fisheries facility at Funahdoo Island in Thaa Atoll. An assessment found MVR 157.3 million needed for the port alone. Shiyam said the facility could be brought into operation more cheaply. Additional feasibility studies for upgrading storage capacity nationwide are underway. The facility, built as a factory in 2004, ceased operations in 2008. The government bought it on 6 March 2022 after Bank of Maldives foreclosed, and handed it to MIFCO.
