Shuhad's family wish for Qisas in murder case

The parents of Abdulla Shuhad, killed in a 2010 clash in Fuvahmulah, expressed their wish for Qisas (death penalty) against Hassan Fareed during a Supreme Court hearing. Fareed was sentenced to death by the Criminal Court in 2015, upheld by the High Court, and appealed to the Supreme Court. The hearing concluded on November 15, 2021, with a changed bench led by Chief Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed. The prosecution requested the death penalty be maintained. House in Hithadhoo used for theft, drugs shut down

The S. Hithadhoo Magistrate's Court ordered a house in Hithadhoo to be closed for three months starting 8 June due to its use for theft, robbery, and drug activities. China tourist dies while diving in Fuvahmulah

A 70-year-old Chinese tourist died while diving at Tiger Shark Point in Fuvahmulah on Thursday. He became unresponsive after boarding the boat and was taken to Fuvahmulah Hospital within five minutes, where he was pronounced dead. The diving centre manager Mohammed Nizam reported the incident at 11:14 a.m. The tourist had completed a shallow dive and was part of a group of Chinese tourists.

Strong Winds Rip Off Roofs, Down Trees in Addu and Fuvahmulah

Strong winds ripped off roofs of at least three houses and downed trees in Addu and Fuvahmulah cities. The Maldives Meteorological Service attributed the weather to the rainy season and issued a yellow alert until 11 p.m. Sunday, warning of strong winds, heavy rains, and rough seas. Fuvahmulah Accident Victim Transferred to Malé for Treatment

A 32-year-old motorist was seriously injured in a road accident in Fuvahmulah City's Dhoondigan District on Monday at 11:43 p.m. The victim crashed into a signpost near a pedestrian crossing. After initial treatment at Fuvahmulah Hospital, he was transferred to Malé early Tuesday morning in severe condition. Fuvahmulah City, the third-largest population center with over 12,790 residents and spanning 491.7 hectares, has ongoing road safety issues. A similar accident in January killed a 30-year-old man.

RACL, Fuvahmulah City Council Discuss Airport Upgrades and Development Masterplan

The Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) and the Fuvahmulah City Council discussed changing the orientation and extending the runway at Fuvahmulah City Airport, in line with President Mohamed Muizzu's vision. RACL Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen shared options with Mayor Ismail Rafeeq and council members. The Development Masterplan includes runway reorientation for jet landings, apron expansion, jet fuel access, and a flying school. RACL and the council will also negotiate a 'Tourism Zone' at a vacant lot adjacent to the airport.

Barge Fined MVR 100 Million for Damage Caused to Fuvahmulah Reef

The barge 'Olympic Kandilo' grounded on the reef of Fuvahmulah in July while transporting rock boulders for the South Beach Protection Project. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fined the barge MVR 100 million after a survey revealed damage to 4,306 square meters of reef. Total damages were calculated at MVR 162.7 million, but the maximum fine under the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act is MVR 100 million. The barge left the country during investigation, and the case was referred to police. The EPA initiated proceedings with the Attorney General's Office to seek compensation.
