MTCC Breaks Ground on MVR 39M Harbor Upgrade in Fiyoaree

MTCC has launched a harbor upgrade project in Fiyoaree, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, worth MVR 38.91 million. The project includes dredging of 45,050 cubic meters total, construction of a 281-meter revetment, 155-meter groyne, and 166-meter L-section quay wall, plus pavement and street lighting. The ceremony was attended by Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib, MTCC CEO Adam Azim, and MP Ashraf Rasheed. The upgrade aims to improve marine access and support the local economy, especially farming and transport sectors. Fiyoaree has about 740 residents and is an agricultural hub.

Government Set to Complete Canned Tuna Distribution by Monday

The Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works announced that the government will complete canned tuna distribution under the 'Roadha Hadhiyaa' programme by Monday. Minister Adam Shareef Umar stated that the final phase will cover Gaafu Dhaalu and Gaafu Alifu Atolls, starting tomorrow. In the Greater Malé Region, distribution uses a token system from 9:30 PM to 11:30 PM. The programme was launched by President Mohamed Muizzu's administration last Ramadan. The government also confirmed continuation of electricity subsidies during Ramadan.

Fishermen Force Out Government Delegation Over Unpaid Dues

A government delegation including a deputy minister from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources was forced out of Dhaandhoo Island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll on Thursday, 26 September 2024, after local fishermen protested over unpaid dues. Fishermen claim the government owes hundreds of thousands of Maldivian rufiyaa, which have not been paid for over two months despite a promise of payment within two weeks. The delegation was there to brief on a saltwater cooling system project. The Ministry has not commented.

MIFCO Faces Backlash Over Layoffs

MIFCO faced backlash after laying off approximately 30 staff from Kooddoo Fisheries Complex, citing irresponsibility, though employees disputed this. The dismissal notice for Ahmed Shain by HDC, dated 8 July, was claimed to be political by MDP. HDC and MIFCO defended actions as policy-based. The layoffs contradict President Muizzu's campaign promise against politically motivated dismissals. Fiscal reforms remain pending cabinet approval.

Marine Police Rescue Divers Stranded Offshore in GDh. Atoll

Marine Police rescued 14 individuals (10 Russian divers and 4 local dive instructors) who were adrift off an uninhabited island near Gan, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll on March 2, 2024. A police speedboat en route from Fuvahmulah spotted a diver and initiated a search and rescue operation. All were safely transported to Gadhdhoo, and their boat was located and towed.

Government to Vet Thai Company Before Handing Over Thinadhoo Airport Project: Infrastructure Ministry

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure clarified that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with Thailand's Pan Pacific Company Limited for developing an international airport at Thinadhoo Island, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The company will be vetted for capacity before signing the main contract. Pan Pacific proposed a 4km runway, passenger and seaplane terminals, a luxury resort, a yacht marina, and a flight school. The project was announced at a Thinadhoo event, and the council and residents first learned of it at the event.
