Nearly one million tourists visit Maldives so far this year

The Maldives has welcomed 999,344 tourists as of June 14, 2026, a 4.9% decline compared to the same period last year. Daily average arrivals stand at 6,057. China remains the largest source market with 154,823 visitors, followed by Russia (137,267) and the UK (83,143). Velana International Airport handled 972,238 arrivals, while Gan and Maafaru airports recorded 3,969 and 3,451 respectively.

VIA, Gan Get Long-Range Lightning Detection Systems

Long-range lightning detection systems were deployed for the first time in the Maldives at Velana International Airport and Gan International Airport. The project was a collaboration between the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Maldives Meteorological Service. The systems will enhance weather monitoring and connect with regional networks. The Environment Ministry plans to expand with short-range systems.
