With a vision for "big change", Nasheed returns to MDP's helm

Former President Mohamed Nasheed left MDP in July 2023 after a fallout with then-President Solih. After two electoral defeats, Nasheed relocated to Ghana. Fayyaz Ismail traveled to Africa to meet Nasheed, leading to his return on June 23, 2025, at a rally in Sultan Park. Nasheed resumed active role, but internal frictions emerged. On April 19, Nasheed and Fayyaz presented 'The Big Change' proposal, including separation of head of state and head of government roles. Nasheed endorsed Fayyaz for presidential candidate in 2028. In the chairperson election, Nasheed campaigned on 'Big Change' and won, visiting 84 islands and nearly 1,500 households.

Tropical Forests Lose Land Area Equivalent to Switzerland

Maryland University research reveals tropical forests loss equivalent to Switzerland's land area in the past year. The political commitment at COP26 to halt deforestation has veered off course. Tree losses surged in 2022, with about 11 football pitches of forest disappearing every minute. Brazil dominated destruction with a 14% increase in deforestation. Indonesia showed a sharp decline in forest loss due to government and corporate actions. Bolivia and Ghana also saw increases. Over 100 world leaders signed the Glasgow Declaration to halt deforestation by 2030. Scientists warn that lost ecosystem services cannot be easily replaced. The tropics experienced a 10% increase in primary rainforest loss in 2022 compared to 2021, with over 4 million hectares deforested.
