Cost Unchanged Despite Delays In Greater Malé Bridge Project: Minister

Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib confirmed that the cost of the Greater Malé Connectivity Bridge remains unchanged at US$500 million despite delays. The project, originally due for completion on 17 May 2024, has been pushed back to 30 September 2026. The contractor, India's Afcons, has received US$186.7 million (37.33% of the contract) and the project is 29% complete. Muththalib attributed delays to Afcons' inexperience, underestimation of complexity, and delayed land reclamation at Gulhifalhu. He stated that the contract will not be terminated and no design changes will be made. The bridge is monitored by consultant Arup Limited. Funding comes from Indian loan and grant assistance.
