Widespread Flooding Displaces Hundreds Across Maldives; Malé and Eight Islands Affected
Heavy rains on Friday caused widespread flooding across the Maldives, displacing hundreds. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) provided temporary shelter and food to 226 people from 36 households. The Met Office recorded 162mm of rainfall in Malé and 164mm in Hulhumalé, the highest levels. The MNDF pumped out 30,569 tonnes of water from Malé streets. Eight islands besides Malé were affected: Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll) 80% submerged; Himmafushi and Guraidhoo (Kaafu Atoll) with severe flooding; Kudahuvadhoo and Meedhoo (Dhaalu Atoll) each 10 houses damaged; Magoodhoo (Faafu Atoll) 9 houses damaged, one evacuated; Feeali (Faafu Atoll) one evacuation; Maamigili (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll) 4 houses damaged; Inguraidhoo (Raa Atoll) and Maroshi (Shaviyani Atoll) storm surge damage.
