Widespread Flooding Displaces Hundreds Across Maldives; Malé and Eight Islands Affected

Heavy rains on Friday caused widespread flooding across the Maldives, displacing hundreds. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) provided temporary shelter and food to 226 people from 36 households. The Met Office recorded 162mm of rainfall in Malé and 164mm in Hulhumalé, the highest levels. The MNDF pumped out 30,569 tonnes of water from Malé streets. Eight islands besides Malé were affected: Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll) 80% submerged; Himmafushi and Guraidhoo (Kaafu Atoll) with severe flooding; Kudahuvadhoo and Meedhoo (Dhaalu Atoll) each 10 houses damaged; Magoodhoo (Faafu Atoll) 9 houses damaged, one evacuated; Feeali (Faafu Atoll) one evacuation; Maamigili (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll) 4 houses damaged; Inguraidhoo (Raa Atoll) and Maroshi (Shaviyani Atoll) storm surge damage.

Police to Conduct Autopsy Abroad for Infant Who Died in Guraidhoo

Police have announced plans to send the body of a four-month-old baby from Guraidhoo Island, Kaafu Atoll abroad for an autopsy following the infant's death on Friday night. The death is under investigation. The child was pronounced dead on arrival at Guraidhoo Health Centre at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, and the body was transported to Malé at 3:00 a.m. No visible injuries were noted, though some media reported signs of a nosebleed. Police have not commented on why the autopsy is being conducted abroad.

Unrelenting Rain Submerges Malé, Damages 144 Houses

Relentless rainfall caused extensive flooding in Malé and four other islands. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported damage to 144 households in Malé. Assistance was provided to 132 households, including sandbags and shelter. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) pumped out 9,306 metric tonnes of water. In Malé, a tree fell on a vehicle. Flooding also occurred in Guraidhoo, Dhiyamigili, Maamendhoo, and Kudahuvadhoo. Velana International Airport experienced flight delays: 17 incoming and 11 outgoing flights delayed over five hours. A Manta Air seaplane was damaged by high winds and sent for repairs. The Maldives Meteorological Service warned of continued severe weather in central and southern regions.
