Construction Minister Abdulla Muththalib announced that the Hanimaadhoo International Airport development is 88.7% complete and on track for completion by September 2025. The project is financed through India Exim Bank Line of Credit. The runway is fully completed, the passenger terminal is 83% done, and other facilities are 96% complete. The $136.6 million expansion includes a new apron and runway capable of handling A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft, with a terminal capacity of 1.3 million passengers annually.

Detection of Eradicated Filariasis in Maldives Raises Concerns

The Maldives, which had declared Filariasis eradicated, detected 16 cases among migrant workers in Kulhudhuffushi City, Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The cases were discovered during a health screening campaign held on 1-2 December by Kulhudhuffushi Hospital in conjunction with the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Further tests are scheduled to confirm the presence of the disease. Filariasis is a parasitic infection transmitted by the Culex mosquito. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed eradication in 2016 after a 2011 survey. The last reported case in the Maldives was in 2004 in Fonadhoo, Laamu Atoll. The hospital has initiated screening of close contacts and urged the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Health authorities are reassessing strategies to prevent further spread.

Two Killed in Gas Cylinder Explosion in Makunudhoo

A gas cylinder explosion on Makunudhoo Island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll killed two Indian nationals on Saturday. The deceased were Mohammad Raja Ansari, 27, and Sudhira Sethy, 25, both employees of Bison Maldives Private Limited, a subcontractor for a land reclamation and coastal protection project. Three Injured, One in Critical Condition After Maintenance Mishap at Kulhudhuffushi Airport

Heavy Rains, Floods Inundate Islands in North

Heavy rains and unprecedented floods have inundated northern islands in the Maldives. The MMS issued a White Alert for Heavy Rain and Flooding for atolls from Haa Alifu to Baa, indicating expected rainfall exceeding 50 mm in one hour or 80 mm in six hours. Winds of 8-18 mph are forecast in central/southern regions, and 3-10 mph in the north. Seas are expected to be moderately rough.
