Study into high absenteeism shows many ninth and tenth graders stay up past midnight
A study by the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) into high absenteeism among ninth and tenth graders reveals many students stay up past midnight, sometimes until 4:00 am, mindlessly surfing the internet. Dr. Aminath Shafiya, IUM assistant professor and dean of the Center for Research and Publications, presented the findings at Dh. Atoll Education Center's Prize Day on June 18, 2026. The study surveyed students in the greater Male' area, AA. Atoll, K. Atoll, and HDh. Atoll. Shafiya noted that lack of sleep causes stomach issues, headaches, and mood problems, leading to school absences. She urged students to manage their time better for adequate sleep.
