MIFCO Disburses MVR 17 Million in Overdue Payments to Fishermen Amid Protests
MIFCO paid MVR 17 million to fishermen for fish sold from August 2023 to September 2024, bringing 2024 total payouts to nearly MVR 1 billion. However, fishermen on Dhaandhoo Island protested four days ago, demanding immediate payment of outstanding dues that have been delayed for over two months. They refused entry to a ministry delegation. MIFCO's fish prices are tied to international rates, and its debt exceeds MVR 1.2 billion. The Ministry of Fisheries has not responded.
