Ihavandhippolhu Set to Revolutionise Economy: Fayyaz
Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail confirmed that the bunkering facility at the Ihavandhippolhu port city project will revolutionize the Maldivian economy. Speaking at the agreement signing between STO and Qatar's UCC, he said the project will develop the northern region. The government aims to establish the north as an economic hub. Ihavandhippolhu is strategically located along the 7-8 degree channel, used by majority of international shipping. Former President Yameen had announced similar iHavan project, but it failed. President Solih continued assessment. Fayyaz noted feasibility studies showed potential. Over USD18 trillion goods and 70,000 ships pass annually. A 2004 Delft study highlighted the location's potential. The project will involve international and private partners. Technical consultants will mitigate environmental impact.
