Land reclamation begins in Girifushi military island
The land reclamation and harbor upgrade project for Kaafu Girifushi, the military training base, was officially inaugurated by Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed at the Girifushi Training Centre. The project is contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The first phase will reclaim 13.3 hectares, adding to the existing 5.7-hectare island, expanding area for military training. It includes rock boulder revetments for coastal protection and breakwaters to prevent erosion. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) stated the project will feature a modern 300-meter small arms firing range, replacing the current 100-meter range, and infrastructure for the Officer Training Wing and NCO Academy, with upgraded accommodation and support systems.
