Local Government Authority Defends Directive to Annul Council Statement
The Local Government Authority (LGA) defended its directive to annul a statement by the Kendikulhudhoo Island Council that accused President Mohamed Muizzu of misusing state resources and urging votes for government-affiliated candidates. Council president Mohamed Rauf refused to retract the statement. Attorney General Ahmed Usham stated that the LGA lacks legal authority to nullify the statement and emphasized the need for a proper inquiry. LGA CEO Dr Mariyam Zulfa argued the intervention was necessary to protect the president's reputation. Minister Adam Shareef assured that no future actions would be taken against council statements, indicating a possible policy shift.
