Maldivians Cautioned of Rare Brain Infection Spreading in Kerala, India

The Consulate General of Maldives to the State of Kerala in India warned Maldivian nationals about the spread of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba. Health authorities in Kerala reported four cases since May, all in children, with three fatalities. The infection occurs when contaminated freshwater enters the nose, but is not transmitted person-to-person or by swallowing. Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, seizures, and later stages involve stiff neck and confusion. The disease is nearly always fatal.

Indian Teacher in Maldives Charged in Certificate Forgery Case

An Indian teacher working at Kalaafaanu School in the Maldives, Abin C Raj, has been charged by Indian authorities in a certificate forgery case in Kerala. Raj is an Economics teacher for Grade 9. The Education Ministry has initiated its own inquiry. Raj allegedly produced fraudulent certificates, including selling a counterfeit degree from Kalinga University for Rs200,000 to Nikhil Thomas. The fraud was exposed after a personal dispute. Maldives Police Service is collaborating with Indian counterparts for Raj's extradition.
