A container fell onto a vessel during unloading at the commercial harbour of Kulhudhuffushi City on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. The incident occurred at around 10:24 am when a container slipped from a crane. Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) confirmed that both the boat and the container sustained damage, but no injuries were reported. Police confirmed no injuries and stated the incident is under investigation. The Kulhudhuffushi Regional Port (KRP) began operations on December 5, 2005.

Half a tonne of drugs seized from Sri Lankan ship in Maldivian waters

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) seized a Sri Lankan fishing vessel operating illegally in Maldivian waters, recovering nearly half a tonne of drugs. The vessel was intercepted near Makunudhoo at 12:45am on 23 November. A search by MNDF Coast Guard and Kulhudhuffushi City Police on 24 November recovered 468.6 kg of drugs, including 344 kg of crystal methamphetamine and 124.6 kg of cocaine. Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau stated the operation was based on a tip-off. Five Sri Lankan crew members were taken into custody. Investigations are ongoing.

Six new filariasis cases were confirmed among migrant workers in Kulhudhuffushi City, bringing total active infections to 25. The cases were detected during a health screening programme from 1-19 December. A total of 434 individuals have been screened. The disease is primarily detected among migrant workers from endemic regions. Filariasis is caused by filarial worms spread by Culex mosquitoes. The Maldives was declared free of filariasis in 2016 after the last reported case in 2004 on Fonadhoo Island, Laamu Atoll. The first survey was in 1951 with WHO assistance, and a special eradication programme began in 1968.
