Minister Muththalib to be summoned to Majlis over stalled water and sewerage projects
A motion has been submitted to summon Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr. Abdulla Muththalib to Parliament over stalled water and sewerage projects. The motion, submitted by MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), seeks a detailed list of affected islands and projected completion dates. Residents and council presidents have expressed concerns: N. Kendhikulhudhoo Council President Mohamed Rauf noted delays due to missing documentation; Velidhoo Council President Athif Hussain said industrial and tourism zones lack connections; MP Mauroof Zakir highlighted urgent needs in Kudarikilu, Dhonfanu, and Kihaadhoo; MDP National Congress member Mohamed Ihusan reported that 100 housing units in M. Kolhufushi lack water, electricity, and sewerage connections. In contrast, GDh. Vaadhoo's project is complete and ready for commissioning, while AA. Bodufolhudhoo's project has stalled. The previous MDP administration passed a bill to establish systems by end of 2025, but the current administration extended the deadline to 2027. Parliament passed the extension on August 11, 2025, and President Muizzu ratified it on August 18.
